Subaru . How to Diagnose an Engine When the Timing Chain BreaksThe timing chain links the crankshaft and the camshaft together mechanically to open and close the valves in conjunction with the piston movement. If the camshaft is out of time with the crankshaft, the cylinder will not seal and produce proper compression to create an explosion. Moving the distributor will not compensate for a failed timing chain because the distributor sets the ignition timing and has little to do with mechanical timing. However, the distributor is connected to the camshaft mechanically to send the spark to the cylinder at the proper time to spark an explosion. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Safety glasses Spark plug wrench Compression gauges Step by Step : 1 Remove the negative terminal from the battery. 2 Remove all of the spark plug wires from the spark plugs. Record the location of all the spark plugs on the engine. Remove the spark plugs from all the cylinders. 3 Unsnap the distributor cap from the distributor. Have someone rotate the engine by rotating the crankshaft slowly by hand, while watching to see if the rotor button in the distributor is moving. The distributor must rotate when the crankshaft is rotated. If the distributor does not turn, the timing chain or camshaft is broken. If the rotor button moves, turn the engine one complete rotation to be sure it turns free. If the engine turns free, proceed to the next step. 4 Replace the negative terminal on the battery. Thread the compression gauge into a cylinder and crank the engine. Record the compression for the cylinder. Repeat this step until all the cylinders have been tested. Compare the compression in all the cylinders. Any cylinders with low compression may indicate a timing chain that has slipped a tooth or two. Tips & Warnings Check the service manual for the recommended compression of your particular vehicle. Always wear safety glasses when working on or around automobiles. Take care to prevent injuries to your hand when rotating an engine by hand.
Subaru . How Do I Get Rid of Smog Equipment on a 1970 Chevelle?Though many classic cars of the muscle car era featured some of the most powerful engines to come out of Detroit, many of those engines were choked off and stifled by suffocating equipment designed to mitigate smog-producing pollutants. The fact that this equipment did very little at the time to curb airborne pollutants makes the whole thing hard to bear for many muscle car enthusiasts. Removing the smog equipment that robs horsepower and stifles performance is an easy task that can be accomplished in a weekend. Difficulty:Easy Instructions Things You'll Need 1/2-inch and 5/8-inch sockets with ratchet Exhaust headers AFB Carter-style carburetor, 650 to 700 CFM Aluminum intake manifold EGR valve bypass fitting Chevy crankshaft pulley without smog pump ring Valve cover breatherRemoving Smog Equipment Step by Step : 1 Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the front EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) port, the carburetor and the EGR fitting on the exhaust manifolds. If you are not planning to upgrade your intake manifold, plug off the EGR port with a solid fitting. 2 Remove the stock exhaust manifolds that feature the EGR fittings. Scrape off the remnants of the exhaust manifold gaskets that remain on the engine block. 3 Loosen all accessories and remove all belts that are driven by the crankshaft pulley on the engine. 4 Unbolt and remove the smog pump. Remove the main crankshaft pulley, as it will need to be replaced with a pulley that does not have a smog pump ring on it. Installing New Parts Step by Step : 1 Install the replacement pulley to the crankshaft. Replace all belts and tighten all accessories. 2 Install new exhaust headers and gaskets. Tighten them with a torque wrench to 25 foot-pounds. 3 Install an aluminum intake manifold and AFB carburetor for best results. If you wish to keep the engine stock, simply cap off all vacuum hoses, except for the one that operates the vacuum secondary on the existing quadrajet carburetor. 4 Place the valve cover breather cap in place of the EGR breather cap. Tips & Warnings For best results, use an aluminum intake manifold and carburetor for increased engine aspiration. In a pinch, the stock exhaust manifolds can still be used, if you cap off each EGR port on them with brass screw-in plugs. Always disconnect the battery before performing any engine work. *Your car may not start for a number of reasons. The following list outlines the most common circumstances and tells you what action you can take to try to remedy each situation: * The car is silent when you turn the key in the ignition. Check the battery terminal cable connections (see Chapter 3). If they look very corroded, force the point of a screwdriver (with an insulated or wooden handle) between the connector and the terminal post and twist it to lodge it firmly. Then try to start the engine. If it starts, you need to clean or replace your cables. You can find instructions for cleaning them in Chapter 3. The car makes a clicking noise but won't start. This sound usually means a dead battery. If not, check the wiring to and from the starter for a loose connection. * The car cranks over but won't start. Check the fuel supply to your engine (see "Fuel" earlier in this chapter, and Chapter 13). If that's okay, check whether the electrical spark is getting through (see "Fire," earlier in this chapter, and Chapter 12). * The engine starts but dies. If your car has a carburetor, check your carburetor adjustment and your choke to see whether the choke is first closing and then opening. (Chapter 13 has instructions for both of these checks.) If you have fuel injection, you'll need professional help. 962

If you find moisture, get some mechanic's solvent from your friendly service station — they use it to clean car parts — or buy an aerosol can of it at an auto supply store. To evaporate any dampness inside the distributor cap, turn the cap upside down and pour or spray some solvent into it. Swish it around and pour it out. Then dry the cap as best you can with a clean, lint-free rag and replace the cap. .Chapter 21: What to Do If Your Car Drops Dead or Won't Start A /j 2 Use only clean solvent; even a tiny speck of dirt can foul the points. Gasoline won't do because a spark can ignite gasoline fumes and cause an explosion or a fire. *" The car won't start on cold mornings. For vehicles with carburetors, check the choke. Is it closed? Does it open? See Chapter 13 for details. If you have fuel injection, you'll need to have a professional diagnose the cold-start problems. Subaru . Why No alternator belt?
The alternator must be driven by a drive belt, or your charging system will fail. Your question really makes no sense. Toyota Yaris. * v0 The engine misses while idling. Check the points (if your car has a non-electronic distributor) and the spark plugs (see Chapter 12). Also check the fuel pump, fuel filter, and carburetor, if you have one (see Chapter 13). The owner's manual can tell you whether your vehicle needs regular unleaded or premium gasoline. Check the cooling system (see Chapter 14). Do a compression check on the engine cylinders (see the section "Checking the Compression in Your Cylinders" in Chapter 13). Jumping, a start If your battery has died, you may be able to use jumper cables to jump a start from some Good Samaritan's car — with one important exception. If either vehicle has an electronic ignition system, the use of jumper cables may damage it. If your vehicle is one that may be damaged in this way, you may find a warning to that effect in the owner's manual or on a decal under the hood. Even if you don't find a warning, it pays to be sure, so call the service department at your dealership and ask about your vehicle's make, model, and year. If you can safely use jumper cables on your vehicle, make sure that the battery on the Good Samaritan's vehicle has at least as much voltage as your own. It doesn't matter whether your car has negative ground and the GS's car has positive ground, or your car has an alternator and the GS's car has a generator, as long as you hook up the cables properly (and the proper way is the same in every case).
